Meet Our Owner and Inspector, Jeff Wood

Construction runs in Jeff's family. His grandfather was the contractor of the family, and his crews graded the later end of Disney's Epcot and MGM Studios. There's still a photo in the family album of that work going on right beside Spaceship Earth.

Jeff holds a North Carolina general contractor license and ran a contracting business of his own, building homes. That's where he learned how a house goes together, piece by piece.

Jeff started inspecting homes in 2005, and that September he passed the National Home Inspector Examination. Along the way he worked for and learned from Austin Boleman, a respected member of the community.

Contracting is hard on your body, and Jeff wanted more time with his family, so he stepped back from it. In 2026 he opened AVL Inspections.

Since 2005 he has completed more than 7,500 inspections. He still inspects every home for AVL Inspections himself.

In Memory

Austin Boleman

Jeff worked for Austin Boleman and learned the inspection trade from him. Austin was a respected member of our community, and he has since passed away.

We remember him here, the way our first website did.

Why a Builder Makes a Better Inspector

Our inspections are done by someone who learned houses by building them. When something looks wrong, we know how it should have been built, why it went wrong, and who you need to fix it.

This fall, on a ranch home over 50 years old, we held a level against the rear basement wall and found horizontal cracking with the wall moving inward. The crack had been caulked over. Caulk on a cracked foundation wall is the kind of thing a builder stops and looks at twice.

In the attic of that same house, someone had cut a roof truss to fit a whole-house fan, and the pieces were pulling loose. Our note on the photo: “Needs To Connect Somehow.” We sent the wall to a licensed engineer and the truss to a qualified contractor.
